Postcard from Amsterdam

Snirklete kanaler, skeive hus, båter, bruer og sykler over alt. Virkelig, over alt.

Amsterdam is the type of city I’ve been dreaming of my whole life, without realising it was a city specifically like the one I had in my mind

Winding canals, leaning houses, boats, bridges, and bicycles everywhere. I mean, absolutely everywhere.

It’s the perfect recipe for my dream city.

I thought I knew what to expect because all of the photos online from Amsterdam are all so beautiful. But I was still so surprised when the automatic doors opened at the Central Station opened, and I was standing in the middle of Amsterdam Centrum.

“Oh my god, it’s so beautiful. Look how pretty. Wow. How wonderful”, I said on repeat. The weather forecast said it would rain, but the sun was shining through greyish dots of clouds in the sky. No wind, only a light breeze in the air.

I walked around with the biggest smile on my face. It’s the nicest feeling, to know that you’re in a completely new city, with new coffee shops and unknowsn destinations behind every new corner of the street.

Traveling is like leaving your normal life for a bit, which was exactly what I wanted. The alarm went off at three in the morning, after just a couple hours of sleep, and we had to get going to the bus station to catch the hour-long coach that would take us to the airport. Cheap flights you know, they’re not gonna go from the closest airport in London.

It was ten in the morning when we finally arrived in Amsterdam Centrum, just in time for breakfast. I ordered a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream in favour of a caffeine shock, and a breakfast that had a bit too much Hollandaise Sauce on top. In our three days there, I could see Hollandaise sauce multiple times on every menu I had a look at. Dutch people really like their Hollandaise sauce.

I take sightseeing seriously, but at two in the afternoon on the first day, we had to stop for a coffee break. Herman fell asleep in my lap while I updated my Instagram Story. It was a much-needed break after being out and about the whole day after just a couple of hours sleep. The Instagram Story is still up on my profile, saved under my highlights. It’s a good one.

We tried to see as much of Amsterdam as possible by wandering around the central the first day, the West part of the city the second day, and the East part of the city the third day before we headed towards central in the evening to catch the trait to the airport.

There were things I wanted to do that we didn’t get the chance to, like visiting the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank house, and the Botanical Garden. However, we still had the most amazing trip.

My favourite moments from our trip are these…

  • The breakfast we had at the restaurant Pllek, which I’m going to mention in my next blog post.
  • When we were sitting by the canal, our feet hanging outside the edge, and a boat drove past us with a dog sitting at the front, smiling up towards the sun.
  • Pancakes with chocolate sauce for dinner on our last day (because we are grownups and can do whatever we want).
  • When we hid away from the rain in the Food Hall and got tipsy on drinks and sat at the same table for two hours because the cocktails made us chatty.
  • The art exhibition ‘High Society’ at the Rijksmuseum was such a highlight. I’ve never seen such beautiful art before.
  • The last few hours before we had to travel home, when we decided to not go sightseeing any longer, but just sit down outside a pub in the sunshine and enjoy a cider each. It was the most magnificent end to our trip.

  1. Your trip sounds lovely and you made me want to book a plane ticket to Amsterdam immediately (but this will have to wait for a few years at least haha). Loved your stories from the trip!
